SUNSET DREAMING
We all dream, day or night. Sunset dreams can represent the beginning of a new phase in life, readiness for a fresh start, and the promise of a new beginning. As mentioned in the Bible, in the book of Genesis, each new day began with new darkness. Therefore, the sunset—not the sunrise—represents the biblical transition into a new day. After the outbreak of Covid-19, people began to be nostalgic. Nostalgia is like an outlet of emotion. People expect that Covid-19 will be gone for good. Two years later, the nostalgia has expanded even more. Old songs are constantly being covered. In the age of precarity, a period of old time was a cure for the dangers of too much panic. Nostalgia found in TV shows and pop songs urges people of our age to imagine such a fantasy, through the narratives of the older generations and our own fantasies, even in our dreams. Sunset Dreaming encompasses an aesthetic imbued with oriental qualities and intensely sensual experience. The aesthetics of East Asia are rooted in Confucianism and are adopted in a gesture towards subtlety and restraint. Oriental beauty is like the moon–a little starlight scattered in the haze, clear and translucent. Its beauty is calm and restrained, subtle and introverted. I have interpreted the beauty of this visual effect, aiming to embody ‘Western as the skeleton, Chinese as the soul’. Combined with an understanding of classical art, the work incorporates fantasy, emotion and memories of life.
