Vertical Integrated Studios

VIS is a learning and teaching practice that enables project-based and collaborative flexible learning and assessment across different year levels and programs.

Students are encouraged to select an elective based on an area of interest via a balloting system.

How VIS works

Students enrolled in various courses are combined in a landing shell (a parent shell). From here, the students are then dispersed into multiple studio shells (child shells).

*Using course enrolment to add in the students means different year levels and programs.

**The number of studio shells are up to you to decide accordingly to interest areas, student numbers or ballot outcomes.

Benefits of VIS

Using VIS in Canvas can provide students the opportunity to participate in vertically integrated projects, where they can:

Learn together in multidisciplinary or varying year level groups
Select interest areas within their course so they can specialise their learning

Important VIS dates

This information is for those who have already begun the process of setting up their VIS shells. If you are interested in starting the VIS process, contact dsc.lt@rmit.edu.au to organise a chat with one of our team members.

Setting up VIS and studio shells is a manual process and can only begin once the SAMS process is completed, so it’s imperative that requests are submitted in a timely manner and that you have factored in enough time for you to build and populate the shells once they are provisioned.

*These dates are subject to change.

**FLEX courses may run using different dates, please contact dsc.lt@rmit.edu.au to discuss FLEX dates.
